What is pulp fiction?
Pulp fiction was a publishing phenomenon that flourished between the
1920s and 1950s, especially in the United States. Its name comes from
the cheap wood pulp paper on which low-cost magazines were printed,
aimed at a broad, popular audience.
Main characteristics:
- Genre narrative: Pulp stories encompassed a wide variety of genres, including science fiction, horror, adventure, western, crime, and romance. They were stories designed to entertain and keep the reader engaged.
- Direct and agile style: The language was simple, with striking descriptions, plenty of dialogue, and a fast pace. The action was constant and the emotions intense.
- Archetypal characters: Brave heroes, tough detectives, ruthless villains, and enigmatic women populated these stories. The conflicts were clear, and the roles were well-defined.
- Exaggerated aesthetics: The covers of pulp magazines were colorful, sensationalist and provocative, with illustrations of monsters, astronauts, smoking guns and damsels in distress.
- Mass production: These stories were produced in large volumes by writers working under pressure and pseudonyms. Even so, this medium produced great authors such as H.P. Lovecraft, Isaac Asimov, and Raymond Chandler.
Legacy:
Though
scorned by critics in its time, pulp fiction left a profound mark on
popular culture, influencing film, comics, television, and contemporary
literature. Today, it is valued as a rich and imaginative form of
cultural expression, a symbol of an era of unfettered creativity. To
truly appreciate it, don't try to read pulp fiction with a 21st-century
mindset. It's simple, fast-paced literature, marked by classic
stereotypes that differ from those of today.
For
writers, delving into pulp fiction represents an excellent form of
creative training. Its brisk pace and thematic freedom allow them to
practice narrative fluency, explore diverse genres, and create
characters and settings quickly and effectively. This direct and
unpretentious style encourages experimentation, helps writers find their
own voice, and serves as a breeding ground for ideas that, with
revision and development, can be transformed into more elaborate stories
or novels. Many great works began as pulp stories, demonstrating its
value as a literary laboratory .
In
fact, many of my short stories and novels are born in the brainstorming
room of my workshop, as little pulp tales that allow me to plant the
seeds for my more structured works.
Perhaps
one day I'll show you some of my draft ideas so you can see how they
develop into complete works—sophisticated, with robust plots and rich
narratives.
