π Differences between Creative, Technical/Academic and Journalistic Writing
Each type of writing has a different purpose, although they all share the need to communicate ideas clearly and effectively. A good writer can activate these three modes depending on the objective of his text.
β¨ 1. Creative Writing
π Its purpose is to excite, entertain and immerse the reader in an imaginary world.
πΉ It is used in novels, short stories, scripts and poetry.
πΉ It has freedom in the use of language, style and structure.
π Example:
"The
storm raged over the city. After the first flash of lightning, the
silhouette of a man appeared on the corner. His eyes, two glowing
embers, watched everything."
π’ How to activate it:
- Use metaphors and sensory descriptions.
- Play with structure and narrative voice.
- Explores human emotions and conflicts.
π 2. Technical or Academic Writing
π Its purpose is to inform in a precise and objective manner.
πΉ It is used in reports, theses, manuals and educational texts.
πΉ It uses formal, clear and direct language.
π Example:
"According
to the Oxford University study (2023), the use of artificial
intelligence in academic writing has increased by 45% in the last two
years."
π’ How to activate it:
- Use reliable data and references.
- Avoid subjectivity and unnecessary adjectives.
- Organize the information with introduction, development and conclusion.
π° 3. Journalistic Writing
π Its objective is to inform clearly and objectively, although it may include analysis and opinion.
πΉ It is used in news, reports, interviews and chronicles.
πΉ It can be brief and direct or narrative and in-depth.
π Example:
"A
power outage left more than 100,000 people without electricity in the
capital last night. Authorities are investigating the causes and promise
to restore service in the coming hours."
π’ How to activate it:
- Use the inverted pyramid structure (most important things first).
- Be clear and objective; if it is a report, add context and testimonies.
- Keep the pace fast to capture the reader's attention.
π How to combine these styles to enrich your writing
A good writer can activate and combine these modes to make his texts more versatile and attractive:
πΉ In a science fiction novel:
You can use creative writing to describe imaginary worlds, but add
technical writing to explain scientific concepts in a credible way.
πΉ In a story based on real events:
You can use elements of journalistic writing to give it realism and
credibility, but with the freedom of creative writing to narrate it with
emotion.
πΉ In a popular article: You can use the structure of academic writing to support your topic, but with a more accessible and attractive narrative tone.
π’ Exercise for writers:
Choose the same event and write about it in three ways: as a story
(creative), as a news story (journalistic), and as a report (technical).
This will help you master all three styles.
π₯ Mastering these three forms of writing will make you a more well-rounded and versatile writer. Test yourself and experiment with each one! βοΈπ
Using prompts to activate your brain or Artificial Intelligence
Writing prompts can help you activate different writing modes depending on the purpose of your text. Did you know that these prompts
can help you activate your biological brain in the same way that they
help artificial intelligences "understand" what you want or how you want
to be helped?
Here are some examples of prompts to "activate" each writing style:
β¨ 1. Activate Creative mode
π Useful for writing short stories, novels, or poetry.
πΉ Creative prompts should generate powerful mental images, intriguing situations, or memorable characters.
π Examples of creative prompts:
- You wake up in a city where no one remembers who you are.
- An astronaut receives a message from Earth⦠but Earth should no longer exist.
- The villain in your story faces his greatest fear: discovering that he's been wrong all along.
- Describe the exact moment when a character realizes that his or her life will change forever.
π’ How to use the prompt:
- Respond with a scene, dialogue, or internal monologue.
- Let your imagination flow, without worrying about logic at the beginning.
π 2. Activate Academic mode
π Useful for essays, articles, research and dissemination.
πΉ Academic prompts should invite reflection, analysis and argumentation based on reliable sources.
π Examples of academic prompts:
- Explains the impact of artificial intelligence on human creativity.
- Analyze how the narrative structure of a classic novel influences current literature.
- Investigates the relationship between reading and cognitive development in children.
- Compare the development of science fiction in the 20th century and in the digital age.
π’ How to use the prompt:
- Research reliable sources before writing.
- Use a clear structure: introduction, development and conclusion.
- Keep a formal tone and avoid unsupported opinions.
π° 3. Activate Journalistic mode
π Useful for news, features, interviews and reports.
πΉ Journalistic prompts should focus on concrete facts, context and analysis.
π Examples of journalistic prompts:
- Write a news story about the discovery of a habitable planet.
- Write a feature story on the impact of independent writers on the publishing industry.
- Interview with a fictional author who has sold millions of books, but no one really knows who he is.
- Describes the day when humanity received its first message from an alien civilization.
π’ How to use the prompt:
- Apply the inverted pyramid: answer who, what, when, where, why and how in the first paragraphs.
- Use quotes or testimonials to give credibility.
- Maintain an objective tone, although in chronicles you can add a narrative touch.
π― Practical exercise:
Take the same topic and write it in the three styles. For example:
Topic: A group of scientists discover a hidden ocean on Mars.
- Creative: Tell the story from the point of view of an astronaut who explores it.
- Academic: Analyze how this discovery would change the search for life in space.
- Journalistic: Write a fictional news story about the event, with statements from experts.
πΉ Mastering these modes will make you a versatile writer ready for any challenge. Put them into practice and find out which one you like best! πβοΈ
