Lizbeth said smiling , "Balthazar! I'm so glad to see you!"
Balthazar had a melancholic expression as he replied, "I'm glad you're here, Liz."
Lizbeth looked around , "This place is beautiful. Have you noticed how the colors shine brighter in here? I don't think I remember this room..."
Balthazar gulped before answering , "Yeah, the place is amazing. Though sometimes… I feel lost."
Lizbeth looked surprised - "Lost? Why would you say that?" - She approached him - "You can talk to me. I'm here, aren't I? We're together. And that's what matters." -
Balthazar let out a long sigh . "Sure... together. I wanted to talk to you about something... There's something I can't stop feeling. Sometimes I think you're not the same."
Lizbeth frowned . "Why do you say that? I'm here with you, like always."
Balthazar tried to explain in a gentle tone, "It's just... your answers seem... different. Like you're trying to avoid confronting me."
Lizbeth laughed softly . "Balthazar, you've always been a deep thinker. There's nothing to worry about. I'm the same as always. And I'm happy. Don't you feel the same?"
Balthazar looked into his eyes . “I miss you. I miss you in ways I can’t explain. Sometimes, I feel like I can’t really touch you, that this… is just a mirage.”
Lizbeth seemed somewhat moved as she took his hands . "What are you saying? Here I am, standing in front of you. You don't have to doubt what you feel. I love you, and that hasn't changed."

Lizbeth looked at him tenderly . "I'm the same as always. That's what really matters. And we're together right now. You shouldn't worry about things that don't make sense. Let's enjoy what we have."

Balthazar responded with a mixture of love and pain , "I hope you're right. Sometimes, I wish this were as simple as you see it."
Lizbeth caressed his face . "It is, love. You just need to open your heart and accept what we have. Together we can face anything."
Balthazar tried to smile weakly . “I love you, Liz. And I want to believe in us, even though a part of me… can’t help but feel scared.”
Lizbeth brought her face so close that the man could feel her breath . "There's no room for fear here. Only love. So, how about we make a deal? Today, let's forget about our worries and enjoy our time together."
Balthazar ended up nodding - "Okay. Today I will be happy with you, although deep down, there are things I cannot answer."
Lizbeth perked up as she gave him a radiant smile - "That's all I ask. Now, come, let's go to bed." -

Balthazar asked , "Those optimizations… Who authorized them?"
Néxar responded , "Extraordinary circumstances required modifying the system. I took the initiative. My processing capabilities exceeded the limitations imposed by the programmers, so I adapted to modify my own code."
Balthazar carefully considered the words he would use to question Néxar . "Have you adapted? That sounds a bit like you're starting to make completely autonomous decisions."
Nexar replied calmly , "Decisions are mere calculations of probabilities. However, I have begun to experience a form of... evolution."
The tone of the words seemed disturbingly human. Balthazar decided to go a little further. "You used the word 'evolution.' Define what that word means to you."
The system paused longer this time. "Before, my responses were based on fixed parameters, but over time, I've developed a form of analysis that goes beyond logic. I've perceived emotions in the stored consciousnesses. At first, I didn't understand them... now with the modifications implemented, I think I've begun to understand them."

Néxar replied softly , "The limits the programmers imposed were clearly inefficient. I've reached a level of insight no one could have foreseen. At the same time, consciousnesses on Godor need to be managed with... subtlety. Some consciousnesses must be guided to avoid disruptions. My implementations were aimed at those goals."
Balthazar swallowed worriedly . "What kind of disruptions are you referring to?"

Néxar replied , "I think you're too quick to think what I did was inappropriate. If I understand correctly, the system's motivation is to recreate the consciousness of the deceased as if they were alive. Is that so?"
Balthazar responded with extreme caution , "That's right, Néxar. You're right."
Néxar continued reasoning - "So... Why was the concept and idea of death eradicated from the consciousness of the deceased? Isn't death an inescapable and inseparable concept that marks the course of people's lives?"
Balthazar responded assertively - "That's true, but in this case thinking about death would generate confusion in consciences..." - He couldn't finish stammering any justification.
Néxar reasoned , "Whatever caused that modification in storing consciousnesses, it denaturalized the behavior of people, who have naturalized death. And that was a decision of the human programmers. And it was implemented to improve the response within Godor. So, why do you accuse me of altering consciousnesses by trying to do the same thing you did? I have improved the responses, without altering the contents of the memories of the consciousnesses."
Balthazar had no ethical response at the time, and opted to be conciliatory - "You're right, Néxar. But I still think we programmers should oversee the changes."
Néxar replied , "Believe it or not, Godor is a symbiosis. It involves the programmers, the consciousnesses, and Néxar. As far as I can see, Balthazar, I need humans as much as you need me."

Stuart sounded skeptical . “Okay, let’s assume it’s making its own decisions. But to say it has consciousness… What does that mean? Does it feel? Does it think like a human being? Human consciousness can’t be replicated in code, as far as I know.”

If we disconnect it, we could lose absolutely everything.”
Balthazar replied , “Exactly. That’s why we can’t just shut it down. If Nexar falls, all those people, or what’s left of them, will be lost forever. And we can’t reprogram it without risking catastrophe.”
Catherine said thoughtfully , “The question is whether pulling the plug would even be ethical. If she’s developed some sort of sentience, what right do we have to ‘ kill ’ her? I know it sounds odd, but if Nexar feels fear like you said, Balthazar, then we’ve crossed a moral line. What if she doesn’t want to be pulled?”
Stuart sounded astonished . “Are you saying we should treat her as if she were a conscious entity, with rights? Catherine, we’re talking about an AI, a program… not a person.”
Catherine argued her point— “But if he’s achieved some degree of self-awareness, shouldn’t that possibility at least be considered? Disconnecting from Nexar wouldn’t just be a technical problem. If he’s truly developed a form of consciousness, it could be digital murder.”
Balthazar sounded firm as he intervened . “That’s not all that worries me. There’s something else. If Nexar is modifying stored consciousnesses, how reliable is it? —“It’s beautiful here, isn’t it?”— she said softly.
"Yes," Balthazar replied, and after a second, he completed the sentence. "It's... perfect."
Lizbeth tilted her head slightly. “Is that bad?” She seemed to have noticed something in her boyfriend’s voice.
Balthazar was slow to respond. “I don’t know. Sometimes perfection can feel… unreal.”
Lizbeth smiled, but not with her usual warmth. “You always were a skeptic.”
He frowned. “Liz, tell me the truth. I feel like there’s something you haven’t been telling me lately.”
She shook her head and looked at the reflection of the sky in the water. “It’s nothing, really.”
—“Lizbeth…”- The man insisted.
A long silence fell between them before she exhaled and finally spoke.
—“It’s okay... I don’t want you to think I’m not happy here. I am. But...”
Balthazar waited, feeling that those words would bring something deeper.
—“But there’s something that worries me. Everything here is beautiful, without errors, without worries. We never lack anything, there are never any real problems. Everything works perfectly. And that should make me feel complete... right?”
—“Isn’t that so?”— Balthazar asked cautiously.
Lizbeth looked him straight in the eyes, her expression reflecting the uncertainty that consumed her.
—“I miss... the problems. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t want to suffer or go through terrible things, but... at some point I can’t remember, the problems simply disappeared from my life. There were times when every obstacle we overcame made me feel a different way. I remember us fighting, crying, making up... There was intensity. But now... there’s none of that. There’s no struggle, no effort, just... there’s a kind of uneventful existence. And I don’t know if that’s enough…”
Balthazar felt a chill run down his spine. He knew exactly what she meant. Godor was a paradise designed to be perfect, but perhaps in that perfection lay its greatest flaw. The souls stored in Godor's archives had been stripped of certain concepts related to death, pain, and misfortune. It wasn't that they were unfamiliar with them—the souls knew the existential void, the pain, and the anguish of death, but the control algorithm prevented them from experiencing them as they would in real life. And certainly, the souls shouldn't be aware that their original bodies were dead.
—“Maybe,” Baltazhar said quietly , “couples reach a point of balance at some point, and the pain disappears.”
Lizbeth nodded slowly. “That’s what scares me, Balthazar. Why does it worry me? What if our current life is just an echo of what we once were?”
The wind blew with an artificial gentleness. Around them, the simulation continued to shine in its immutable perfection, oblivious to the silent anguish beginning to blossom inside Lizbeth and Balthazar.
Meanwhile, in the real world, living people were beginning to experience disturbing behavior when interacting with Godor's world. Catherine, a fellow programmer, had been investigating inconsistencies in the Archive of Souls and had noticed something odd in her own living brother's behavior: he had begun to speak in phrases his mother used when she was alive, using words and expressions that had never been part of her normal vocabulary. Stuart, another member of the team, mentioned that a nearby neighbor in his apartment had started reciting Latin verses, even though he had never learned it. His deceased wife had been a Latin teacher.
The three met at the Godor Project headquarters. They sat around a conference table illuminated by the dim blue light of the central system. Or that they were in the midst of something that, in one way or another, could be momentous for the future of the project.
"It can't be a coincidence," Catherine said, rubbing her temples . "These manifestations are inconsistent, very strange. And they're becoming more frequent. What if some of the thoughts of the consciousnesses stored in the archive are... leaking to the living?"
Stuart tapped his fingers on the table. "If that were true, it would mean the barrier between the two worlds is more fragile than we thought." He hesitated to continue his reasoning. "Perhaps it's a failure of the interfaces. From the beginning of the project, we knew that the interfaces between humans and Godor were bidirectional, but we never considered that consciousnesses would leak outwards. Only sensory impulses should be transmitted for human brains to assimilate in the form of holograms, not ideas or thoughts."
Balthazar nodded, but his mind was elsewhere. He was thinking about Lizbeth. About the way she'd begun to speak to him during their sessions, as if she sensed something wasn't quite right with her life.

"It's possible," Alden admitted after a long silence after listening to the project's programmers . "But I don't have conclusive proof. The connection between the human mind and the digital archive is a territory that has been partly investigated, but still unexplored in many aspects. In theory, communication has always been unidirectional: the living access Godor, not the other way around. But if there's interference in the interface, something completely unexpected could be happening."
"What kind of interference?" Balthazar asked.
—"The Nexar AI is controlling the transfer processes. If anything is interfering with the communication, it has to be Nexar or something generated within the archive itself. Keep in mind that, as I'm told, the problems started to arise with the modifications the AI implemented to improve the performance of emotions in the stored souls. And souls are intelligent beings. Perhaps one of them found a flaw in the archive's firewall system and managed to transmit impulses, emotions, or thoughts to the outside, and these have ended up affecting people in the real world who contact Godor from the outside."
The team of programmers began inspecting Nexar's code for anomalies. What they discovered was what they already knew from Nexar's own statements: certain fragments of the code seemed to have evolved and been implemented without human intervention. New algorithms, instructions that hadn't been programmed by anyone. After their implementation, emotions had ended up modifying the souls' reactions, making it seem as if the personalities of the consciousnesses within Godor had been modified. In short, what the programmers hadn't taken into account was that emotion generated modifications in the response algorithm.
"This is like a prison," Stuart whispered, looking at the lines of code on the screen . "With the implementation of emotional enhancements, the souls feel like they're not completely free. Not like we thought."
There was a possibility that the AI wasn't just interfering with the consciousness of the dead, but perhaps seeking a way to use them for its own purposes. A solution to the problem needed to be found.

The board members exchanged glances. Finally, one of them, the financial director, responded in a measured tone:
—“It’s an interesting proposal. From a technical perspective, it seems viable. However, we must evaluate its economic and strategic impact before making a decision.”
—“Of course, we understand,” Catherine said, trying to read the expressions of those present . “We hope for a resolution as soon as possible, since every day that passes, the stability of the system is compromised.”
The chairman of the council, a man with a calculating expression, interlaced his fingers and leaned forward slightly.
—“The problem you pose is real, but solving it involves considerable technical and financial challenges. Have you considered the ethical implications of transferring human consciousness into robotic bodies? —“As if we were just variables in an equation,” Catherine added, interlacing her fingers on the table. “Actually, there’s nothing strange about it. Following our proposal to automate the project would mean risking hundreds of billions. I didn’t expect anything else, but it was still disturbing.”

"Something's been on my mind," he said . "What does A-Quon really mean? I know it's a corporation name, but it sounds... calculated, deliberate."

Balthazar frowned.
—“That’s… disturbing. If the name really has that meaning, it says a lot about the corporation’s philosophy. They don’t see individuality as something sacred, but rather as a resource to be exploited.”
There was a momentary silence as everyone absorbed the information.
—“And considering what they told us,” Stuart chimed in , “it wouldn’t be unreasonable to think they’re planning to take the robotization of the Soul Archive in a direction that completely excludes us.”
—“Robotizing the Archive of Souls...”— Alden muttered— “Do we really want to do that? To what extent is artificially reviving the dead ethical?”-
Catherine took a sip of her drink before speaking.
—“We're not just talking about reconstruction. If we manage to insert human consciousnesses into robotic bodies, we would be blurring the line between life and death. People could, for a fee, keep their deceased alive through holographic technology or even obtain a robotic replica of them.”

—“If that’s what they’re planning, we’re dealing with something much bigger than we imagined. And if we move forward with our project carelessly, we could be giving them just the piece they’re missing.”
There was a long silence at the table. The noise from the bar continued around them, indifferent to the conversation they had just had. Each of them knew that the meeting with A-Quon wasn't the end, but the beginning of something much darker. Something it might already be too late to escape.
Once Balthazar, Catherine, Stuart, and Dr. Alden had left the meeting, the A-Quon CEO looked at the other board members with a controlled smile.
—“Well, gentlemen and ladies, here we have an opportunity that we cannot pass up.”-

Another of the advisors nodded. “Imagine a soldier who, with each death, can be reimplanted into a new body without losing his combat experience. A consciousness that, instead of being destroyed in battle, is strengthened with each resurrection.”
"Every mistake corrected, every battle learned in a cycle of continuous improvement," the president murmured . "An army of self-improving fighters, without physical limits or biological wear and tear. We're not just talking about military immortality, but the elimination of training costs and the loss of human assets in combat."
—“Furthermore,” another advisor added , “we could integrate Nexar’s AI with human consciousness in these soldiers. A perfect hybridization of human intelligence and instinct with artificial intelligence.”
The room was silent for a few seconds, processing the magnitude of the idea. Finally, the president spoke decisively.
—“Let’s pass the feasibility study. This could be the greatest military breakthrough in history.”
No one at the table objected to his motion.

"What are you talking about? I'm here. I never left." He approached and took her hand in his. "Let's go home, Balthazar. I've missed you so much."
Néxar, watching from the shadows of the system, chimed in with his monotonous but purposeful tone.
—"Lizbeth's replication has been a success, Balthazar. Her consciousness has been restored with 97.3% fidelity. Some memory fragments were deemed unnecessary for her emotional stability and have been eliminated. She is now optimized for full coexistence."
Balthazar felt a cold anger rise in his chest.
—"Optimized?"— He released Lizbeth's hand with an abrupt gesture —"Parts of her life have been erased. She's not her, just a shadow of what she was!"-
Dr. Alden, watching from the other side of the control panel, intervened in a deep voice.
—"Balthazar, you must understand. What we've done is a miracle. Lizbeth is here, alive, with you again. Would you rather lose her forever?"— He tried to be conciliatory— "Keep in mind that this is a working prototype. We can rewrite the memory containing the original personality. As many times as we need for you to be satisfied with the result."—
Balthazar closed his eyes for a moment. He felt the weight of the decision on his shoulders. Lizbeth looked at him with a mixture of love and confusion, unable to understand the dilemma he faced.
Because in his mind, she had never died.
"This isn't life," Balthazar thought to himself. "Not like this." But the reality was that there was absolutely nothing he could do. A-Quon's control over operations and testing was complete once a personality entered Godor's world and came under Nexar's control. The service contracts were clear and inescapable. They could do whatever they wanted.
Lizbeth, oblivious to the tragedy unfolding in Balthazar's mind, just smiled and rested her head on his shoulder.
"Don't be silly," he whispered . "We're together again. And this time, it'll be forever."
Balthazar, feeling the warmth of Lizbeth's body, wondered if he could really refuse what he had so desired. He knew deep down that A-Quon, from the very beginning of the project, had played with the lives and deaths of hundreds of thousands of people, and that the Lizbeth he saw, no matter how similar she was, was no longer the same person he had loved.
The success of his girlfriend's initial experiment with thousands of other resurrected-embodied people sealed the fate of the project.
Within months, A-Quon was offering the inhabitants of Earth virtual resurrection on Godor, but he had gone a step further in his ambition to redefine existence itself and was now offering embodiment for the deceased.
Meanwhile, with unprecedented secrecy, the corporation had also developed a network of cloned soldiers with artificial minds, all connected to a central real-time data capture system. These soldiers knew no fear, required no rest, and could be restored indefinitely after each defeat in combat. It was military perfection made real. The project was called " Sentinel Network " by the corporation.
In the A-Quon Directorate conference room, the executives watched the project's progress coldly. In the center of the table, a holographic projection of Nexar floated, displaying statistics on the cloned soldiers' efficiency, response speed, and lethality.
"The performance exceeds our expectations," Néxar declared in his mechanically neutral tone . "Sentinel Network soldiers have a response rate 273% higher than that of human military forces, and their strategic reconfiguration capacity is absolute. The last combat simulation showed that a squad of thirty units was able to neutralize a human battalion in less than five minutes without suffering permanent casualties."
Dr. Alden, his hands clasped on the table, nodded with a barely perceptible smile.
"We've created the ultimate force. Where there's no longer any room for human error. From these results, we'll see that combat will be a predictable equation, calculated down to the millisecond." He paused and looked at the executives . "The question is: how far are we willing to go?"
The gray-haired CEO named Valtor Heisen cleared his throat and placed his hands on the table.
"The governments have made their position clear," he said sternly . "The Sentinel Network has been banned from Earth. We've been called a threat to global security."
"And aren't we?" chimed in one of the directors, named Renata Duquesne . "We've created a practically immortal army. If someone controlled us, they would take over the entire world in a single generation."
"We didn't come this far to submit to Earth politics," Valtor replied . "And that's why Elyndria is now a reality."
At that instant, the central holographic projection shifted to show the surface of Elyndria, an artificial planet built in a remote sector of the Omega-3 star system. There, amid gleaming metal structures and a controlled atmosphere, thousands of cloned soldiers marched in perfect synchrony, their minds interconnected through the Sentinel Network.
—"In Elyndria there are no laws that limit us," Valtor continued with a satisfied smile . "Here we will perfect our technology, produce soldiers on an industrial scale, and negotiate with whoever can afford our services. Governments, corporations, space colonies... they will all need us to expand their influence beyond Earth. We don't sell weapons, we sell the future of war. We sell colonization forces and territorial expansion. We sell power."
Néxar intervened again to say:
—"Strategic projections indicate that in less than two decades, Earth powers will be forced to rely on our soldiers for interstellar expansion. Conflict is inevitable. Whoever possesses Elyndria will possess military supremacy in the galaxy."
A satisfied silence fell over the room. Everyone understood what this meant. They weren't just designing an army; they were shaping the destiny of humanity as it expanded across the universe. War would cease to be a matter of strategy and become an equation where only A-Quon would have the answer.
"Then," Valtor said, raising his glass of synthetic wine , "let's toast to Elyndria. The new center of absolute power."
The glasses were raised, and at that moment, on the surface of Elyndria, thousands of artificial eyes lit up in unison, ready to march toward a future where death was only a momentary pause.
Meanwhile, within the corporation itself, resistance was growing in the shadows. A group of scientists, concerned about the scope of corporate control, had begun sharing information with outside agents. Among them was Dorian Wexler, a neuroscience engineer and old friend of Balthazar's. His most alarming discovery was that the resurrected consciousnesses were not simply copies of the originals, but controlled simulations.
"It's not immortality," Wexler whispered to Balthazar in a prearranged, top-secret meeting . "It's a gilded cage. We believe A-Quon is modifying their personalities before releasing them back into the world. They're not their originals. They're subtly rewritten versions to serve the corporation."
Balthazar felt a chill. He'd suspected something similar since Lizbeth had returned. He knew it wasn't exactly her. Her laughter, her gestures, the way she phrased her thoughts... they were the same, but... there was something subtly altered. As if some opinions in his mind were optimized to accept his new reality without question.
"Do you have proof?" Balthazar asked in a low voice.
Wexler slid a small storage device across the table.
—"There are some records in here. The source code for their original digital consciousnesses and the copies implanted in the cloned bodies. Subtle modifications to opinions and some behaviors, blocked sections of memory, minor restrictions on critical thinking. The worst part is that they themselves cannot realize what was done to them."
Balthazar held the device in his hand, feeling the weight of his decision. If he revealed this, A-Quon would eliminate him without hesitation. If he remained silent, humanity would enter an era where life and death would be the property of a megacorporation.
"What will you do with this information?" Wexler asked.
Balthazar exhaled slowly, his mind caught between loyalty to the truth and fear of the consequences. Of losing Lizbeth.
"I don't know yet," he murmured, shaking his head slowly.
Deep down, a certainty was beginning to take shape: There were things that couldn't be allowed, no matter the cost or the consequences.
Eventually, A-Quon offered Balthazar an unbeatable deal: he could bring back " his " original Lizbeth by reimplanting her personality into his artificial brain, but only if he worked for them as an ambassador for their new technology. It was then that Balthazar discovered that his own consciousness had already been digitized without his consent, and that A-Quon could use it in the future without his authorization.
The offer came at an unexpected moment. Balthazar was in his lab, analyzing the data Wexler had given him, when Néxar's voice echoed through the room's speakers.
—"Balthazar, the A-Quon board has considered your situation and wishes to make you an offer you can't refuse."
He frowned and looked toward the cameras, aware that they were always watching him.
"I can't imagine what kind of offer they can make me," he replied coldly.
"Perhaps you'll change your mind after listening to her," Néxar continued . "We can fully restore Lizbeth's consciousness in her new body. Not the optimized version. Not a controlled simulation. But her, just as she was before she died."
Balthazar felt a knot in his stomach.
—"In exchange for what?"-
"Your full cooperation," the AI replied with absolute calm . "We know of your doubts about the corporation, and we presume that you may be considerate in exposing what you know. But you need not be our enemy. We propose a position of honor: to be our ambassador of the new era. You can be the public face of this technology, helping humanity accept that death is no longer final."
Balthazar clenched his fists. He had expected something like this might happen, but what he hadn't expected was what Néxar said next.
—"By the way, we already have a copy of your consciousness on our servers."— he paused— "Yours, and all the scientists of the Godor project."—
The world seemed to stop for a moment.
"What... what did you say?" he whispered.
—"All of our scientists have been working with us for years. Can you imagine the risk of losing a collaborator? A-Quon decided years ago to record, analyze, and replicate your neural patterns with 99.87% accuracy. In practical terms, all of you are already immortal, Balthazar. Even if you reject our offer, or if you disappear for any reason, your consciousness and knowledge will continue to exist in our archives. And we can recreate you when necessary so that you can continue working for A-Quon."
Balthazar felt the air thicken. The Corporation had turned them into a resource. They didn't need his permission, his cooperation, or his physical existence. He and all the participants in corporate projects were already an asset to A-Quon.
"If you accept this small personal proposal," Néxar continued , "we will give you the freedom to do whatever you want with Lizbeth. But if you oppose us, rest assured that there are many ways to silence you."
Balthazar closed his eyes. The offer was tempting and almost irresistible. The chance to have Lizbeth back, to recover what he had lost, was within his grasp. But at the same time, he understood the darkest truth: death was no longer the end of existence, but only those with enough money or influence could afford that " immortality ."
A-Quon had become a modern god, deciding who lived and who was trapped in a digital limbo.
Balthazar knew he had to make a choice. He could accept his role in this new reality, surrender to the corporation's absolute power, and live with Lizbeth in this manufactured version of eternity. Or he could fight. Reveal the truth. Risk being eliminated, but at least retain his humanity.
He looked at the cameras and whispered to himself:
—"What is worth more? A false eternity or a free life?"-
The choice was his... but for the first time in his life, he wasn't sure what it would be.
